Enhancing Energy Efficiency with 3M Prestige 40 Window Film for Double-Glazed Windows & E Glass
At Total Tint Solutions, we have been relayed information by our customers by their Glass Company / Glaziers that customers will lose some / all the thermal benefits by putting a window film on the glass (externally). Especially on Viridian Smart Glass.
This is a massive claim and one you can add to the BS bucket.
Tinting double glazed windows and e-glass is possible.
Firstly, if window film is installed on the exterior then the film doesn’t touch the low E coating and it’s not affected.
Secondly, It’s worth noting that for double or insulated glazing, this isn’t a concern, as the Low-E coating is typically applied to either Surface 2 or 3, meaning the interior side.
So why are customers not happy with their required Low E smart glass?
The backstory reveals that the National Construction Code (NCC) mandated the use of Low-E glass in all new constructions. But overlooked the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC), resulting in excessively hot houses during summer months. Consequently, homeowners are now seeking solutions to mitigate this summer heat issue, even if it means sacrificing the winter U-value benefits.
But with 3M Prestige Exterior, you get have the best of both worlds.
Challenges with Low-E glass and window films.
Low-E glass is available with both ‘Hard’ and ‘Soft’ Pyrolytic coatings, but distinguishing between the two can be confusing. When it comes to installing internal solar films on Low-E glass, there are significant challenges to consider
The ISSUES:
- Yes, internal film will negate the Low E glass properties. For Example, they lose the Heat Loss Reduction benefits in Winter! But they do get a lot better Solar Heat gain reduction for Summer!
- When cleaning the internal Low E coating for the film installation, you can easily ‘scratch’ the ‘Soft’ Low E coating. This may not be even noticed until the film is installed and then the shadow it casts on the floor can highlight these scratches.
- A Second issue with the ‘Hard’ Low E Coatings is that the very act of cleaning with a Scrapper blade can actually leave metal fragments on the glass. These basically rust under the film! (it is recommended to use a low-level HCL wipe to remove this!)
- Finally, If the window film needs removal from the soft coating this can also be an issue with getting the PSA off the glass. Again leading to scratching of the glass.
This is why it’s not recommended to add the film directly to the Low E coatings. But this isn’t the only option. Using an exterior window film allows the window film to not be in contact with the low e film.
3M Prestige Exterior Films are 100% suitable and recommended for single-paned Low E Glass!
3M Exterior window tinting will not reduce the glass performance!
When installing the 3M Prestige Exterior film, we’re leaving the Low-E coating untouched, avoiding any potential issues while maintaining the glass’s U-value. By applying an external film, we enhance the Total Solar Energy Rejected (TSER). This aligns with the typical preferences of homeowners seeking to mitigate heat and glare. This solution effectively boosts performance. While it’s true that in extremely cold climates, there may be a reduction in passive heat gain during winter, this concern doesn’t apply to Perth or similar regions.
