3M Neutral Exterior

Product overview

Strong exterior solar control without a highly mirrored finish.

3M Neutral 35 Exterior is designed for buildings that need meaningful heat and glare reduction with a more understated appearance than traditional silver film.

Applied to the outside surface of suitable glass, its metallised construction reflects solar energy and reduces visible light. The neutral tone helps soften exterior reflection while retaining a practical level of daylight.

Best for Commercial buildings, offices, retail premises, public facilities and selected homes where exterior solar control and a balanced neutral appearance are important.

Why choose Neutral 35 Exterior?

Balanced heat, glare and appearance.

Neutral 35 Exterior sits between clear, high-light films and heavily reflective silver films, making it a practical option for projects that need both performance and restrained aesthetics.

HEAT
Reduces solar heat

Rejects 62% of total solar energy on the glazing configuration listed by 3M.

GLARE
Controls brightness

Reduced visible-light transmission helps ease glare in bright rooms and screen-based workspaces.

LOOK
Maintains a neutral appearance

Lower reflectivity provides a softer exterior finish than strongly mirrored silver film.

UV
Reduces UV exposure

99.9% UV blocking helps slow fading of furnishings, flooring, displays and finishes.

Product performance

Measured performance on double-pane clear glass.

The supplied 3M brochure lists these values for double-pane, 6 mm clear glass.

Where it works

Exterior solar control for demanding glazing.

A professional review confirms whether the performance, appearance and exterior installation suit the building.

1
Office buildings
Reduce solar heat and screen glare while maintaining a restrained commercial appearance.
2
Retail premises
Manage heat and UV exposure across large storefront and display windows.
3
Hospitality venues
Improve comfort around sun-exposed windows without creating a highly mirrored facade.
4
Schools and public buildings
Control excessive sunlight in occupied rooms and shared public spaces.
5
Selected homes
Suit residential windows where meaningful heat reduction and a neutral finish are preferred.
6
Inaccessible interiors
Provide an exterior installation option where indoor access is disruptive or impractical.
Professional specification

Confirm compatibility
before installation.

  • Identify the glass and coatings
  • Review orientation and solar exposure
  • Assess edges, seals and water exposure
  • Confirm appearance and daylight needs
Important considerations

A balanced film still changes the glass.

Neutral 35 Exterior is less mirror-like than Silver Exterior, but customers should still expect lower daylight and a visible change in appearance.

1
Moderate reflection
The neutral finish is softer than silver film, but the glass will still appear more reflective than untreated clear glass.
2
Reduced natural light
The listed glazing transmits 37% of visible light after film installation.
3
Daytime screening only
Any privacy benefit depends on lighting conditions and should not be relied upon at night.

            FAQ

            Frequently Asked Questions

Neutral 35 Exterior is an exterior-applied solar-control film from the 3M Traditional Series. It uses metallised technology to reduce solar heat and glare while creating a softer, more neutral appearance than highly reflective silver films.

Neutral 35 Exterior has lower visible-light reflection and a less mirror-like finish. Silver Exterior provides stronger solar rejection and daytime screening, while Neutral 35 Exterior offers a more balanced appearance.

Its exterior reflection can improve daytime screening when it is brighter outside than inside. It does not provide guaranteed night-time privacy because internal lighting can reduce or reverse the effect.

Exterior application allows the film to manage solar energy at the outside surface and may suit glazing or buildings where an internal installation is impractical or inappropriate.

The supplied 3M data lists 99.9% UV blocking. This helps reduce one of the main contributors to fading, although visible light, heat, humidity and material quality can also cause fading.

No. The existing glass, coatings, frame, seals, orientation and exterior exposure must be reviewed before the film is specified.
